Greek Researchers: “Electronic Cigarettes No Threat to Heart Disease”

Finally some good news out of Greece, a country which I would love to visit one day and that offers some awesome cuisine!
According to Greek researchers, the electronic cigarettes does not pose a thread to the heart. This is the latest news and was the product of an actual clinical study.
This is big news, everyone. Let me tell you why.
A clinical study is an actual test in a controlled environment. This is closely monitored and not just an opinion from someone in Greece. This is the real deal and among the most positive bits of news I’ve heard about the industry in quite some time. If you are a vapor cigarette smoker like me, you certainly are sick and tired of all the nay-sayers out there talking about e-cigarettes in a bad light. This bit of news is certainly welcome in my book so I dug deeper and check out just what the news release (which I found on Business Week) stated.
Some highlights are below:
- This information was presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting in Munich.
- 20 daily smokers were pitted against 22 people smoking electronic cigarettes in 7 minute tests.
- Smokers (tobacco) showed significant disruptions in heart beat and blood pressure.
- Electronic cigarette smokers showed “minimal” signs of disruption.
This is the quote I took away from the report that people will enjoy reading the most:
“Currently available data suggest that electronic cigarettes are far less harmful, and substituting tobacco with electronic cigarettes may be beneficial to health,” Farsalinos said.
Wow, bold statement! And certainly a good one for the future of the e-cigarette industry.
Nicotine is absorbed by the bloodstream at a much slower rate in electronic cigarettes when compared to their tobacco counterparts. This is a major reason why the trends are pointing to e-cigarettes being “healthier” as more reports are being released and more time is spent studying the affects of electronic cigarettes. Right now, 2.5 million users are thought to be located in the USA alone. That number is only expected to grow as many people don’t even know about electronic cigarette smoking right now.

Most Famous Cigarette Smokers

I have to admit, when I smoked cigarettes, I thought it was because it was cool. Honestly. Seriously. How dumb does that sound? “Looking cool” is so en vogue when you are a teenager, and fitting in is usually the top priority. Everything from being a cheerleader to being the Prom Queen to being the “most popular” certainly makes high school an emotional time. One of the most challenging decisions I made when I was in high school was the “choice” (if you call it that) to smoke cigarettes. You see, all the cool kids were doing it, so what did I have to lose?
I’ll leave my dumb high school flashbacks in the closet and just admit that I smoked cigarettes at the time because “everyone was doing it.” While that may not be the right answer, it certainly resonated with me and justified sucking down cancer sticks at every party or social outing – but that led me to think – who else was smoking cigarettes that made it cool?
So, today’s post is about famous cigarette smokers. I spent a lot of time on this one, and am really happy with the outcome, so please tell me your thoughts at the end of the article and let me know if I left anyone out!
Johnny Depp
Trying to name a movie featuring Johnny Depp NOT smoking is like trying to find the Bermuda Triangle and come back to talk about it. In one of my favorite Johnny Depp Movies, Blow, Johnny Depp plays the part of George Jung, the cocaine kingpin who helped route Colombian product from the Medellin Cartel to US soil. Depp’s character is constantly smoking as he deals with the likes of Pablo Escobar and other outlaws. Ditto for Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, and Donnie Brasco.
The item that makes Johnny Depp so perfect for this list is the fact that he smoked an electronic cigarette in the movie “The Tourist.” While the movie got mixed reviews, the scenes with co-star Angelina Jolie where Depp’s character uses an electronic cigarette certainly helped put electronic smoking on the map.
Drew Barrymore smokes “2-3″ packs of Marlboro Reds per day and started her habit at the tender age of nine! If that isn’t disturbing enough, take into consideration that she also was drinking at age 11, smoking marijuana at age 12, and doing lines of cocaine at age 13. Luckily she made it to rehab at age 13, but after the short stint, she attempted suicide at age 14 and went right back.
Who said that cigarettes aren’t a gateway to something even more dangerous?
Model Kate Moss reportedly smokes 4 packs of Marlboro Lights each day and has smoked since age 12!
President of the United States Barack Obama is a smoker. While I wasn’t about to post photos of him that appeared to be edited with
Photo Shop, I did find this (albeit old) photo of Barack Obama smoking a cigarette. I have to admit, for all the news feeds and websites I came across that confirmed Barack Obama is a smoker, there weren’t many options for photos. Sure, there were a few of him smoking cigars but I figure what man doesn’t light up a stogie in celebration once in a while?
Just because Robert De Niro plays the big shot in Italian Mafioso type movies and smokes cigarettes with the rest of the gang, does that mean he smokes in real life? Sources say YES, Robert De Niro is a social smoker but nothing more. In fact, in the movie Good Fellas, one blog I came across reported that he never inhaled throughout the numerous scenes where he is smoking a cigarette.
Much like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino has starred in many movies where he plays a man of power, often playing the role of the leader and most of the time, the villain that people cheer for. (Scarface, The Godfather come to mind.) While Al Pacino started smoking up to four packs of cigarettes in the mid 1980′s, he quit his two pack per day habit in 1994 in order to protect his voice. Thanks to IMDB.com for that tidbit of information! These days, they say, Pacino occasionally smokes herbal cigarettes and nothing more. Someone should send him an electronic cigarette starter kit!
Moving on to Rock Stars, Keith Richards has to be the number one smoker who comes to mind. Richards is the hard partying member of the Rolling Stones who recently gave up drinking in order to keep his health in order, but who refuses to give up smoking cigarettes. According to StarPulse.com, “Keith simply can’t start the day properly without the cigarette.”
Smoking doesn’t stop in Hollywood and in the Rock & Roll scene, however. Barack Obama isn’t the only political figure who has an affinity for cigarette smoking. Winston Churchill, Gerald Ford, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton – all smokers.
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter novels = smoker. Albert Einstein smoked, as did Thomas Edison. Seems like great minds think alike, as they say.
There are plenty of examples above of macho men and “hunks” smoking cigarettes, but what about all the sexy ladies who smoke
cigarettes? There are PLENTY of women who smoke, including: Raquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Shakira, Elizabeth Taylor, Demi Moore, Britney Spears, Kate Middleton, and of course, Marilyn Monroe.
I’m going to list all the cigar smokers in another post, as it deserves it’s own space.
The last Gallup poll I found online stated that 21% of the American population had smoked in the last week. While that number is down from a prior update of 44%, clearly society is trying to make it “Look cool” to smoke. We see it in Hollywood, we notice our idols doing it, and the advertisements are prominent.
My dream is to one day report on the number of famous electronic cigarette smokers is greater than the number of cigarette smokers.
Let’s make that happen!

I remember going out in high school, feeling rebellious, and smoking. The guys always tried to show off and be all macho, smoking their Swisher Sweets Wood Tips that they would somehow get at the convenience store. Who sold them to them, I don’t know, but they always thought it was the rebel “cool kid” thing do to.
Fast forward eight years, and I see Swisher brand is entering electronic smoking. Wow, that’s a big sign for the industry. Swisher Sweets is a SERIOUS brand, for sale pretty much anywhere you can get cigarettes.
Yes, you heard me right – Swisher Sweets is now making electronic cigars, and from the report I read, electronic cigarettes as well. Does this take me as a surprise? It shouldn’t, I mean Blu Cigs was bought by Lorillard, a Big Tobacco Giant. Face it, the world is slowly – actually – check that – RAPIDLY moving to a society where cigarette smoke just isn’t permitted or accepted. It’s natural that big brands would want to get their slice of the e-cigarette pie, and I’m happy the awesome Swisher brand has come to the party.
If you haven’t heard of Swisher Sweets, you probably have never entered a gas station, Walgreens, or CVS in the past 25 years. They are everywhere! I know their Wood Tips, grape, wine, and peach flavors packaging – you can’t miss it. I think they have a backwoods type cigar as well if I’m not mistaken, a rough, chewy type of smoke.

In a move that will make many customers happy, popular e-cigarette company V2 Cigs has cut prices substantially. The cost cuts were announced last week from their Miami headquarters in a press release.
The major price reductions are for all product lines and reach nearly 20% form their previous price points. The company shot out of a cannon in 2010 and has recently been ranked by Internet Company Alexa.com as the #1 electronic cigarette company in the world. A pioneer and leading engineer in a competitive market, the move takes their standard starter kit (a basic entry level kit that has everything one needs to get started smoking e-cigs) from $79.95 to only $64.95.

Company rep Dan Recio was quoted as saying “We value our customers and have put them first from the very beginning.”
I’m a big fan of V2 Cigs and was shocked at this move. Always with leading quality, and already low prices, I’m not sure why they would do this to their margins? Maybe it’s a move to really ramp up sales before selling to a gigantic Big Tobacco company? Maybe it’s a move to grow the brand a bit before the rumored FDA ruling (that may ban online sales – more on that later) that will come down later this fall? I don’t know, but as a fan of the brand and someone smoking e-cigs, I can’t argue with lower prices!

Disposable Electronic Cigarette

Disposable electronic cigarettes are commonly found at gas stations and similar convenience stores, and they are the cheapest way to get started with electronic cigarette smoking. Disposable e-cigarettes, or “disposables” as most of the vapor community simply shortens their name to, are the most common retail product of electronic cigarettes.
If you are ever on the fence about electronic cigarettes or just want to try one for the first time and not go through the process of buying an entire e-cigarette starter kit, the disposable is the best way to go. Selling as cheap as $8.99 and going no further north than $11.99, these are equivalent to a couple packs of cigarettes or “300 – 700 puffs” as most advertising claims boast. A lot of that depends on your smoking style and how you really use the product, but it’s hard to argue a smarter way to check out electronic cigarette smoking than buying a cheap disposable product.
There are many brands currently dominating the retail space at time of publishing this update. I’ll do my best to highlight those brands below. (Special thanks to my friend Kevin who is in retail and knows a lot about the various distribution deals.)
Blu Cigs (which I recently reviewed) is probably the most commonly known brand that is now in the retail market. Their website states that they have partnered with over 12,000 retailers in the USA, and on their website they even have a store locator which can help you find a shop that sells Blu Cigs in your area. Pretty cool function!
I did a few zip code tests with Blu Cigs and could only pull up Walgreens in my area. Oddly enough, I typed in my relatives zip code in Minnesota and the search returned zero results. So, maybe its’ regional distribution, but I’ve seen them for sale in Walgreens with my own eyes so Blu Cigs definitely has that deal in place in some regions.
NJoy is another brand of electronic cigarettes that I’ve seen for sale in gas stations. This brand is an old guard in the e-cig space, having been around for a while. Their site goes one step further than Blu Cigs, in the respect that when I clicked “Find a store” it already had my IP address and showed various locations in my area selling NJoy products. I found Chevron, 7 Eleven, and HESS all selling Njoy. That’s some serious distribution! When I used my relatives address, it was showing numerous Holiday station stores. I’d have to opine that NJoy is the leading retail brand as far as reach. (Even if the reviews are mixed, can’t argue that Njoy is out there doing their thing in the retail world.)

Disposable electronic cigarettes make sense for retailers because it’s very few SKU’s. The starter kits don’t make sense in places where people are buying a smoke because there are so many SKU’s for the retailer to carry and stock. It’s not a real easy way to make money when you don’t know what people will buy either. That’s why most retailers carry disposables in the most common varieties, like the tobacco flavor and menthol. Many don’t even make zero nicotine disposables.

Ever Smoke Cartridge Boxes Resemble traditional cigarette packs!
Like most of the popular e-cig brands offering the great KR808 battery, Ever Smoke offers the two different switches on the batteries: Automatic and Manual. Manual works by pressing a tiny button as you puff, and is known to create a larger vapor, however it lasts approximately 25% less as long as the Automatic. The Automatic, slightly more convenient in that it is activated by the user puffing on it, produces a less intense vapor, but has it’s benefits nonetheless. Having tried both, I slightly prefer the Manual because I am very fond of a thick inhale and powerful throat hit. Any e-cig brand I use I always try out in the manual version before judging the vapor production. However, because I do use the Personal Charging Case pretty regularly on hectic days, and it can only be used with Mini Automatic batteries, I have to say that it does not make that big of a difference between the two, and I have no complaints with them. The Personal Charging Case is well designed, and a nice accessory that charges the batteries on the go.

I like having several batteries in rotation, and it means I always have backup. The USB charger, wall charger, and car charger are pretty indispensable, and make just plugging in whenever you need a charge you are set.
